Blue Road – The Edna O’Brien Story
Synopsis
With its bold depiction of female sexuality, Edna O’Brien’s pioneering debut novel The Country Girls (1960) was celebrated abroad but banned in Ireland. A pariah at home, she moved to London, where her volatile marriage exploded as her literary stardom ascended; divorced, O’Brien became known for her star-studded soirées and affairs (including Marlon Brando). Her life was as incredible as her work – she shattered societal norms and inspired generations of writers, especially women. At 93, just before her passing, she gave an expansive interview for this documentary, which director Sinéad O’Shea (Prayers for Our Sinners, SFF 2023) combines with moving archival footage. The result is a rousing and fitting tribute.
