Synopsis

After renting out a room in her home to fund medical expenses, Olga is horrified to find her space infested by an unexpected pest: her tenant’s nine-year-old son. Berlinale 2026.

One year on from his fourth feature, acclaimed Mexican writer-director Fernando Eimbcke (Olmo, SFF 2025) returns with this amusing black and white tale of a pair of unlikely housemates. When Olga, an older woman without friends or close relationships, sources much needed income by renting out a room in her flat, the tenant sneaks in his nine-year-old son, Cristian. Soon Olga’s carefully controlled world begins to shift and a fondness grows. Teresa Sánchez (Prayers for the Stolen, SFF 2021) stars as the moody final boss in the gamified day-to-day of her energetic cohabitant, played by newcomer Bastian Escobar. This tender film sees Eimbcke play to his strengths, delivering some of his strongest catharsis yet.

It’s a movie whose relatively simple means of communication give it a disarming emotional directness.
