Synopsis

Filmed over 15 years, Ivan Castiñeiras’ enchanting film conjures the legends and stories of the ancient Spanish-Portuguese border. Rotterdam 2025.

Shot on rich 16mm, this beautiful portrait of place asks a simple question: how do you come of age in an ancient land? We learn the history of old kings and border smugglers. We hear the sheep bells. We feel the rhythms of harvest. And we watch Mariana grow from a four-year-old into a young woman who must decide whether to leave the village for the city. Recalling the lyrical cinema of Vittorio De Seta, who documented the disappearing worlds of 1950s rural Italy, this impressive debut summons the myths, rituals and labour that sustain a place over time.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

I was enchanted by Gods of Stone. It gives the audience exactly enough to make sense of the changes we see, and – thanks again to the analogue format – looks beautiful doing so.
