Islands
Synopsis
In his best role since bursting onto the scene as Joy Division’s Ian Curtis in Control, Sam Riley plays Tom, an aimless tennis coach at a Canary Islands resort whose life is a dispiriting blur of booze and one-night stands. That’s until Anne (Martin) checks in with young son Anton and arrogant husband Dave – who makes the telling observation that “even in a place like this, people want to pretend to be someone else.” Chemistry counts for everything in tales such as this and the tension between Riley and Martin positively sizzles from the moment their characters lock eyes. Notes of Hitchcock and Patricia Highsmith accent this gorgeously shot neo-noir puzzle box by Jan-Ole Gerster (Oh Boy, SFF 2013; Lara, 2019).
