Synopsis

This Venice award winner is the first-ever Rohingya-language feature, following two young siblings on a perilous journey to Malaysia to reunite with their scattered family.

Nine-year-old Somira and her four-year-old little brother Shafi set out from a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh hoping to find their way to Malaysia, where their uncle has settled. What begins as a journey by boat soon becomes something far scarier when the children are separated from the group and left to navigate unfamiliar terrain, with only each other to rely on. Director Akio Fujimoto keeps close to the children's perspective, allowing moments of play, confusion and tenderness to sit alongside the fear and uncertainty of displacement. Made with a largely non-professional cast of over 200 Rohingya participants, Lost Land is a visceral, humane story of survival and the search for somewhere to call home.

A powerful and unflinching story of displacement.
