One of Those Days When Hemme Dies
Synopsis
In a resplendent opening sequence, fieldhand Eyüp (Firatoglu) labours under a blistering Turkish sun amidst a ruby-red sea of salt-curing, sun-drying tomatoes. It’s thankless work, even before he clashes with supervisor Hemme over unpaid wages. A despondent Eyüp storms off swearing revenge, but a parade of villagers, relatives and blasts from the past distract from his mission with favours, detours and anecdotes – all the while Eyüp’s unpaid debts and the threat of arrest loom large. This gently absurdist shaggy-dog story won the Special Jury Prize in the Horizons sidebar at Venice 2024. With echoes of Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry (SFF 1998), it’s a beguiling blend of mundane beauty and ticking-clock tension.
