Synopsis

Revenge is a dish best served sun-dried in this wry and lyrical Venice prize-winner, which marks a remarkably assured debut for Murat Fıratoğlu as writer, director and star.

In a resplendent opening sequence, fieldhand Eyüp (Firatoglu) labours under a blistering Turkish sun amidst a ruby-red sea of salt-curing, sun-drying tomatoes. It’s thankless work, even before he clashes with supervisor Hemme over unpaid wages. A despondent Eyüp storms off swearing revenge, but a parade of villagers, relatives and blasts from the past distract from his mission with favours, detours and anecdotes – all the while Eyüp’s unpaid debts and the threat of arrest loom large. This gently absurdist shaggy-dog story won the Special Jury Prize in the Horizons sidebar at Venice 2024. With echoes of Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry (SFF 1998), it’s a beguiling blend of mundane beauty and ticking-clock tension.

One of Those Days When Hemme Dies is a film which forces the audience to stop and observe the small everyday actions of life, the small but significant acts of rebellion carried out by souls who have no intention of laying down arms.
