Synopsis

K-pop icon Kwon Yuri (of Girls’ Generation) stars in a riveting and twisted psychological thriller about a dangerously disturbed child and her distraught mother. Be afraid. Busan 2024.

The complex relationship between mothers and daughters is examined in this remarkably assured feature debut from co-directors Kim Yeo-jung and Lee Jung-chan. Their precision-tooled exercise in suspense opens with Young-eun, a swimming instructor and single mother, and So-hyun, her increasingly violent and unruly seven-year-old daughter. A truly shocking event takes us forward 20 years, and new enigmatic characters including a death-scene cleaner, played by Yuri, take centre stage. Though time has elapsed, the past lingers ominously as the pieces of this tense puzzle fall into place. The primarily female cast excels, with the talented Gi So-yoo delivering an all-time great ‘evil child’ performance as So-hyun.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

Skilfully turns our focus into a character-searching game through bold developments, while also consistently posing heavy questions about family and motherhood. In summary, it has a relentless and compelling appeal.
