The Heart Is a Muscle
Synopsis
In Cape Town, loving couple Ryan and Laila are raising their son Jude. For his fifth birthday, they throw a party for close friends. When Jude disappears during the festivities, panic sets in. Frantically searching the surrounding streets, Ryan is told that a young boy was seen with a man in a neighbourhood controlled by criminal gangs. The distraught dad tracks down and beats the man, only to return home to find that Jude was there, hiding, all along. Ryan’s attempts to atone lead to an honest assessment of a violent past and glimmer of hope for the future. Keenan Arrison (Shirley Adams, SFF 2010) is superb as the conflicted Ryan – so conditioned to resort to violence, yet so determined to escape the cycle forever.
