Synopsis

Paul Dano, Jude Law, Alicia Vikander and Jeffrey Wright star in Olivier Assayas' (Personal Shopper, SFF 2016) political thriller about the rise of Vladimir Putin. Venice 2025.

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia in the early '90s was both chaotic and filled with opportunity for the smart and brave. Enter the talented Vadim Baranov (Dano) – first idealistic theatre maker, then reality TV producer and ultimately spin doctor to rising KGB agent, Vladimir Putin (Law, superb). Using his skill for constructing dramatic narratives, Baranov begins to shape the new Russia, partnering with the brutally calculating Putin to manipulate and control the unruly nation. An incisive and brilliantly acted analysis into the accumulation and use of political power – and the delicate line between democracy and authoritarianism – The Wizard of the Kremlin is both riveting and timely.

A screenplay dense with incident and ideological discussion is carried efficiently by fast-moving, sleek direction and sumptuous mise en scene that catches the tone of a changing society and its sudden explosion of capitalist excess.
