Synopsis

Inspired by the lead actor’s real life as a Mongolian horseback performer, this award-winning debut is a study of masculinity and culture in crisis. Venice 2024.

On the wintry steppes of Inner Mongolia, herdsman Saina performs athletic horseback feats at night, thrilling audiences with his portrayals of noble cavalrymen. Despite his virtuosity in the arena, Saina’s reality is grim and ever-shifting. Climate change, urbanisation and Chinese encroachment has eroded the life he once knew, and Saina must balance his masculine pride with the demands of his dysfunctional family. Helmed by Manchurian filmmaker Xiaoxuan Jiang, this fictionalised take on her lead actor’s life is an intimate Western by way of Chloe Zhao’s The Rider. A visually stunning elegy to those trapped in a confusing modern world, the film thrums with love for the art of horse-riding and for Mongolian culture.

Limited seats are available for patrons requiring access for wheelchairs, low vision and hearing loop. Please contact our ticketing team directly on 1300 733 733 or tickets@sff.org.au to complete your booking.

Jiang is able to illuminate so many cares of the modern world through the life of one man.
