Synopsis

When new love enters both of their lives, the bond between a father and son is tested in this simmering Singaporean drama from Anthony Chen (Ilo Ilo, SFF 2014). Berlinale 2026.

The future is full of potential for 21-year-old Junyang as he finishes his mandatory national service. But his hard-working father, Boon Kiat, worries he's going to squander it if he doesn't start to get serious. New love changes the course of both their lives in this class-conscious, Singapore-set household drama. The final instalment in his thematic 'growing up' trilogy, following the award-winning Wet Season and Ilo Ilo, Chen's latest once again stars meta-muse, Koh Jia Ler – no longer a boy. As the first-ever Singaporean film to feature in competition at the Berlinale, the quietly epic We Are All Strangers is the story of two generations forced to live with their choices – and with each other.

The writer-director takes in the tiniest moments – that can turn a day around, change an outlook or redirect a life.
