Writing Hawa
Synopsis
Aged 52, Hawa is learning to read and write; she’s also starting a textile business and caring for a granddaughter fleeing an oppressive father. Hawa’s struggles against Afghanistan’s patriarchy are captured by her daughter, the journalist Najiba Noori, in her remarkable directorial debut – a breakout at IDFA, the world’s largest documentary festival. What begins as a story of one woman’s emancipation becomes something much larger when the Taliban take Kabul in 2021. Noori is forced to flee the country – leaving her brother to pick up the camera at home as the family faces an impossible choice; stay or escape. A powerful testament to women’s resilience, both deeply personal and universally resonant.
